One World, Many Beliefs
How did the universe start? How did the life on earth begin?
For thousands of years people have searched for answers to such questions. Some people believe that science will solve the mysteries. But, in the earliest times, science couldn’t explain natural events such as earthquake, life, death etc. People believed that it was work of beings greater and more powerful than humans: the gods.
Today many people still seek an understanding of life through worship of god. They often feel that their faith often helps them live life better.
Some religions teach that there is only one god, a supreme being who made the universe and controls the world. This is called ‘monotheism’. The worship of several powerful gods is ‘polytheism’.
In different cultures, god is known by different names.
The behaviour of a god can vary from religion to religion. Some religions may see their god as unforgiving and cruel. Other consider their god as being merciful and kind. But all gods play a part in understanding their world.
