OLD PERCENTAGE SYSTEM V/S NEW GRADING SYSTEM
WHAT IS PERCENTAGE SYSTEM/SCORING SYSTEM?
Educational acumen of the student is judged by the merit obtained. Too much importance is given to the marks. In this system marks are used as a measure of student’s achievement. Students who get less than 33% marks are declared fail.
ADVANTAGES OF PERCENTAGE SYSTEM-
·This system inculcates a sense of competition among students.
·The students study to their maximum potential to get maximum marks and to come at par with the other students at national and international level.
·All great politicians, scientists, educationists are the product of this scoring system.
PITFALLS IN SCORING SYSTEM-
·The term fail or compartment in the scoring system carries a social stigma besides carrying irreparable damage to the self esteem of the students.
·Three hours final examination does not test the true I.Q. of the students.
·During exams there is too much tension on the students that some students become nervous, some gets depressed and some even commit suicide.
WHAT IS GRADING SYSTEM?
The grading system is based on continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) in the form of formative and summative assessments. The formative assessment will evaluate the class work, homework, assignments and project work. The summative assessment will be in the form of term and exams. This system is better as the grades will not be based on one exam but on the performance throughout the year. So, the fear that the new system will promote mediocrity is quite baseless.
ADVANTAGES OF GRADING SYSTEM-
·This system will remove the fear and stress associated with marks and exams and thus helps in creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
·This system will encourage students to discover their creativity and talent.
·This system will eliminate cut throat competition.
·The peers will become partners.
·The students will be able to explore, discover and learn rather than mugging text books.
·The emphasis will be not only on theory but also on practical knowledge.
·This system will reduce stress factor on students.
·No student will be labeled as fail. Those below D2 will be given 5 chances to improve.
PITFALLS IN GRADATION SYSTEM-
·This system does not inculcate a sense of competition.
·This system does not help in seeking admission in professional courses.
·This does not stimulate the students.
CONCLUSION-
The grading system is not the panacea for all ills afflicting the education system. It’s the survival of the fittest in this world. With the question papers becoming more objective and periodic, the scoring system scores over the grading system. Grading by CCE should be a complementary to the scoring system rather than replacing it.
